How can we plan the future of a district in a way that truly reflects the needs of its residents? We sought to answer this question in September 2025 by launching a comprehensive qualitative focus group study in Budapest’s XVIII. district. Our goal was to initiate a dialogue and hear directly from the people living here about the challenges they face and the opportunities they envision.
The research focused on four key neighbourhoods:
September 10th in Pestszentlőrinc,
September 11th in the Havanna housing estate – for the first time in the district’s history,
September 17th in Pestszentimre,
September 18th in the Gyorsforgalmi Road area.
A total of 50 district residents participated in the discussions across the four locations. The meetings were held in an exceptionally positive atmosphere, where participants openly and honestly shared their thoughts. A wealth of valuable experiences, critical observations, and constructive suggestions were voiced.
The Common Denominator: Community, Collaboration, Environment
Although each neighbourhood has its own unique characteristics and issues, three central themes clearly emerged from the conversations:
The Importance of Community Spaces: Whether parks, playgrounds, or cultural institutions, there was a clear demand for high-quality, functional public spaces where people can meet and recharge.
Strengthening Local Cooperation: Participants emphasized the need for closer partnerships between civil organizations, local businesses, and the municipality to achieve common goals.
The Desire for Environmental Improvement: A commitment to cleaner streets, more green spaces, and sustainable solutions was evident in every group.
These insights provide a solid foundation upon which we can collectively shape the future of the XVIII. district. This research has proven that immense strength and knowledge lie within our local communities. We thank all participants for contributing to this important work!
